TTP said that its media wing was sponsoring the website.
LAHORE – Pakistan’s social media space exploded on Sunday criticising Outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) newly launched official internet presence. The account that hosted the website was suspended by the web hosting service provider within hours, Dunya News Web Desk has learnt.
According to media reports, an official statement from Taliban was widely distribtued to the press announcing the website. The website aimed to disseminate content including magazines, interviews, official statements, images and videos, the press statement said.
The website also contained videos comprising graphic content including the ones that could potentially spark sectarian violence.
TTP said that its media wing was sponsoring the website.
The website was widely criticised on social media with activists calling Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) attention. Many even slammed PTA and other government authorities while bringing the irony of ban on YouTube among other websites.
It merits mentioning here that Pakistan is facing almost a decade old insurgency at the hands of Taliban factions grouped under umbrella of Tehreek-e-Taliban. The new governing parties including Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) had campaigned in elections in favour of resolving the years old conflict through dialogue.
The ruling party secured a vote of confidence in favour of dialogue through a session of All Parties Conference (APC) and to act on the recommendation upon willingness from Taliban, committees to represent both government and Taliban were formed and the process continued.
However, all negotiations stalled as a number of civilians and military personnel were brutalized whose responsibility was claimed by Taliban.
Following a number of air strikes by Pakistan military, Taliban agreed to a month-long ceasefire which was later reciprocated by the government. The ceasefire was also renewed for ten days after it expired earlier this month.
